I always enjoy the energy of traveling to a big city like London but sometimes it can be overwhelming. Last winter, we took a little respite from our “big city” adventures and headed to Hertfordshire. We stayed at the Hanbury Manor Marriott and Country Club for a few days. Aside from Bath in Somerset, we have never stayed anywhere else outside of London. The idea of staying at an English manor gave the three of us a little bit of Downton-y feeling!
This Jacobean manor is steeped in history. It was built as a family home in the 17th century, became a boarding school, and eventually a hotel. It underwent numerous renovations over the years but still kept the grandiose theme. We spent some time walking around the impeccably manicured grounds and gardens and admiring the brickwork and arches of the building. It was definitely a refreshing and relaxing experience to be surrounded by verdant landscape, and be away from the craze of the big city.
How pretty is this scene? Large, comfortable wingback chair next to the fireplace… I relive this moment in my head all the time. Imagine all the great conversations to be had, or books to be read in this setting.
Staying in a place like this is not complete without enjoying afternoon tea. We partook in a delicious repast of tea sandwiches, scones, petit fours, and Jing teas at the Oak Hall. The food, views, the architecture, and the attentive service not only delighted us but also gave us memorable experience. We will definitely go back in a heartbeat.
